Artist Statement
I don't set out to produce art about one thing or another. I'm always carrying either a pencil or a pen, so I am constantly drawing on any kind of paper I can find; sometimes, these drawings are left on the paper, and other times, they develop into more in-depth ideas and detailed images.
My work tends to focus on emotions. I feel the most inspired to create something usually after watching a good film, listening to a song or reading a book that I really liked. What I like the most about art is the freedom artists have to express their thoughts and ideas, and what I like about design is the opportunity to create a different way to see everyday things. I like to spend a significant amount of time working on a project because that is the only way things can come out the way I visualized them.
I love illustration and working with images. I really do believe that an image can tell more than a thousand words. If with my images or my illustrations, a person can get the idea of the emotion I want to convey, then I realize my work is done. Although, when I’m working I’m not expecting it to have any kind of influence on anyone. If people can get something out of my art, either good or bad, or my piece of art makes them think about a certain subject, I’m fine with it. Nevertheless, I do want to make my art speak for itself and say whatever it has to say to the viewer.
My influences are first and foremost everything I see, feel, and experience. Like every time I go shopping, I can’t help but buy something that later I realize I don’t need but felt the necessity of buying it just because it had a pretty package or the colors attracted me. Something about the presentation of the product is what got my attention, and that’s what we graphic designers do, make the product marketable. Something else that attracted me were comic books and coloring books. I love anything with good illustrations. I guess one of my biggest influences is Japanese anime. Japanese art is happy and revolves on cuteness, and that is something that I feel very comfortable working with. The artists I most admire is Winsor McCay, a cartoonist and animator who created Little Nemo. I grew up watching Disney classic films such as Snow White, Cinderella, Pinocchio which also were a big influence on me, and I would like someday to work as an illustrator for Disney Pixar animation.
